That cat has a human face

Doesn't the face on this manul give you the feeling that he can speak a human language in a quiet, raspy, but very wise voice. Creepy.

Woops...

Courtesy http://www.nasa.gov/:

Extent of surface melt over Greenland’s ice sheet on July 8 (left) and July 12 (right). Measurements from three satellites showed that on July 8, about 40 percent of the ice sheet had undergone thawing at or near the surface. In just a few days, the melting had dramatically accelerated and an estimated 97 percent of the ice sheet surface had thawed by July 12. In the image, the areas classified as “probable melt” (light pink) correspond to those sites where at least one satellite detected surface melting. The areas classified as “melt” (dark pink) correspond to sites where two or three satellites detected surface melting. The satellites are measuring different physical properties at different scales and are passing over Greenland at different times. As a whole, they provide a picture of an extreme melt event about which scientists are very confident. Credit: Nicolo E. DiGirolamo, SSAI/NASA GSFC, and Jesse Allen, NASA Earth Observatory

Celebrity Sighting

Good news, ladies. I spotted a very intoxicated Brad Pitt stumbling out of a dive bar on Western and Roscoe.

Hong Kong Apartment

Architect, Gary Chang, took his tiny 360 square foot Hong Kong apartment and turned it in to an efficient 24 room livable space.  This should give Ash and M. of The Dim Sum Diary some great ideas for their space in HK.  With M.'s love of Transformers, they should have their walls sliding into 50 or so rooms in no time. I expect to see a full size movie theater and billiard room in their place on our next visit.

Beer Beard

Hey hipsters. Tired of being shunned to the outer circle of that group that you didn't want to be a part of anyway, because you're way too awesome and you just don't care?  Is that patchy, haggard excuse for a face sweater leaving you cold and lonely with only your skinny jeans to keep you warm at night?  Not to worry. Thanks to this handmade Beard Coozie, now your PBR tallboy will be able to step up and fill in even more of the blanks left by your missing social skills. You're welcome.

#ShellFail

This video is horribly ironic, but slightly hilarious.  I'd assume you normally wouldn't want oil colored liquid shooting out of the beverage rig at your Arctic drilling release party.

Then and Now: Oscar the Grouch

Stumbled across this email I sent out for work a few months back and thought I'd share with everyone.  We were having a contest where you had to email your favorite celebrity then and now update.  I made up my own.

Then: Oscar the Grouch was a Muppet character on the television program Sesame Street. He has a green body and no (visible) nose (although he claims to have one), and lived in a trash can.

Now: Oscar lives in Greenwich, CT with his wife and two daughters.  He founded his own small commodity hedge fund named O.T. Grouch Capital.  He attributes his success to his family, work ethic, and knowing what it’s like to really live life in the gutter.  Oscar rides his bike to work every day due to not being able to obtain a drivers license…. Because he is a puppet.
On May 29, 2009, Oscar the Grouch appeared in an ABC television special on economics called Un-broke: What You Need To Know About Money. He shared the fundamentals of everyday finance with facts about credit cards, mortgages, stocks and bonds, and investing.

Puppets are people too

After a quite raucous St. Patrick's Day in Chicago I was happy to find that there were some terrific movies on TV for me to enjoy while nursing my debilitating hangover on Sunday. One of them being the hilarious Forgetting Sarah Marshall which I tend to find myself watching all the way through anytime it is on.  I was pretty sure Jason Segel would have put his Dracula puppet rock opera into production by now, but I can find little information that leads me to think this will ever happen. Maybe some day? One can hope.

While the Dracula show might be a long shot, it seems that there is a chance Segel will be making another film starring some of his puppet friends. Segel has recently purchased his own script back from an unnamed studio that he sold off back when he was a lesser known 21 year old actor. Segel describes the new film as “a kids adventure movie in the style of Goonies or Labyrinth or something like that.” Take a look at the full article from The Film Stage here.

Beautifully deep

Astrophysicist Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson was asked by a reader of TIME magazine, “What is the most astounding fact you can share with us about the Universe?” This is his answer.

Feeling a bit sluggish today

And this good looking fella shares my sentiment.  Whit snapped some pictures of these huge slugs while we were outside a church in Neudstat (Wied), Germany waiting for a friend's wedding to begin.  This creature (Arion - rufus for you slug buffs?) really captures the ALL of the excitement that normally resides in this sleepy German village.  We took the opportunity to liven things up for the weekend we were in town.  Thank you for your hospitality, Neudstat (Wied)! We're sorry that you almost had to kick us out of your 5 room hotel/bowling alley/restaurant/bar and glad that you didn't... it was the only hotel in town.
