Oh good!

Chris Farley is back! We should be expecting some serious comedy and heavy synthetic drug abuse from this baby in about 25 years.

Jewish Penicillin

I came down with something nasty over the weekend and my lovely wife made me some matzo ball soup to help with my recovery. The recipe came from "The Joy of Cooking" which I understand has been a staple cookbook in many homes since approximately 1931. Quite delicious, and highly recommended anytime you're under the weather. Thanks, wife!

Then and Now: Oscar the Grouch

Stumbled across this email I sent out for work a few months back and thought I'd share with everyone.  We were having a contest where you had to email your favorite celebrity then and now update.  I made up my own.

Then: Oscar the Grouch was a Muppet character on the television program Sesame Street. He has a green body and no (visible) nose (although he claims to have one), and lived in a trash can.

Now: Oscar lives in Greenwich, CT with his wife and two daughters.  He founded his own small commodity hedge fund named O.T. Grouch Capital.  He attributes his success to his family, work ethic, and knowing what it’s like to really live life in the gutter.  Oscar rides his bike to work every day due to not being able to obtain a drivers license…. Because he is a puppet.
On May 29, 2009, Oscar the Grouch appeared in an ABC television special on economics called Un-broke: What You Need To Know About Money. He shared the fundamentals of everyday finance with facts about credit cards, mortgages, stocks and bonds, and investing.

Places in Time: Chicago

An amazing timelapse from the artist Chris Pritchard. I highly suggest clicking here to view the video in a larger HD format on the Vimeo site. The small window on Bearded Brain just does not do Chris' work justice.

"All footage for this piece was shot between 2010 and now. My goal was to provide a glimpse into the energy and fast paced life of an average day in downtown Chicago, enhanced through fast motion timelapse. Some of the viewpoints and locations may seem familiar, but I've also tried to showcase the city from a number of different and less common vantage points"

Fun With Shadows

Not totally sure what to do with that hoard of trash piling up in the alley behind your apartment?  If you're feeling creative (and maybe a little twisted?) like Tim Noble & Sue Webster you can spend the afternoon arranging this rubbish into abstract forms, then shining light onto your heap to display a figurative shadow. Take a look at their entire collection here. Check out "Turning the Seventh Corner", which looks to have you walking through a series of dark tunnels until you stumble upon one of their shadow pieces.

Happy Birthday tooooo Whit

We made it back from Southeast Asia (pics and stories to come) in one piece just to celebrate Whit's birthday.  Happy birthday to my lovely wife!

She's been talking about getting a turn table in our apartment for some time, so I thought this would be a perfect chance to get her the retro music device of her dreams along with her requested 'Bad Company' LP (thanks for the album, Dad!). I was also lucky enough to track down a rare LP of Sigur Ros' "Ágætis byrjun" which has the incredibly beautiful song that played both during our wedding procession AND when Steve Zissou finally found the jaguar shark, "Staralfur" (song starts about 2:30).

Now comes the task of finding a stand or table of some sort to set this record player on.  My first inclination is to build one so I thought I'd check the web for ideas.  While whatever I would build would be nowhere near as cool as what's shown above, I wanted to share with everyone this very cool stand/box/hub of drawers called "Shrine".  At $5,000 this Rubix cube for your record player might be a little out of my price range... but I think it would really tie the room together.
