The Muir Project

On July 10, 2011 seven multi-media artists set out to capture the sights, sounds, and experiences of hiking the 219 mile John Muir Trail in 25 days. Check out the trailer and like, share, and contribute to help bring this epic adventure to the masses.

The crew just surpassed their goal of 5k likes on Facebook and REI has matched this with a $5,000 pledge to their Kickstarter fund. Incredible all around.

Superheroes - HBO Documentaries

This is real. The HBO Documentary from director Michael Barnett, Superheroes, provides a glimpse into the lives of a few Real Life Superheroes (RLSH). The 80 minute film follows these eccentric crusaders as they attempt to rid the streets of violent crime, and help those in need.

A noble cause fueled by delusions? Maybe. But this documentary is absolutely worth the watch.

80's Video Friday

While research shows this was NOT the first documented sighting of the 80's video dance move known as the "80's gentleman snap and twist", this is clearly the first video to show the move perfected. This 1986 masterpiece not only contains the legendary dance move, but they've also thrown in  an electric keyboard on a shoulder strap just for good measure.

Thanks to my friend Amy B. for this week's 80's Video Friday submission.  This was her pick because "Steve looks really nice "...

Extent of surface melt over Greenland’s ice sheet on July 8 (left) and July 12 (right). Measurements from three satellites showed that on July 8, about 40 percent of the ice sheet had undergone thawing at or near the surface. In just a few days, the melting had dramatically accelerated and an estimated 97 percent of the ice sheet surface had thawed by July 12. In the image, the areas classified as “probable melt” (light pink) correspond to those sites where at least one satellite detected surface melting. The areas classified as “melt” (dark pink) correspond to sites where two or three satellites detected surface melting. The satellites are measuring different physical properties at different scales and are passing over Greenland at different times. As a whole, they provide a picture of an extreme melt event about which scientists are very confident. Credit: Nicolo E. DiGirolamo, SSAI/NASA GSFC, and Jesse Allen, NASA Earth Observatory

Pot-smoking moms tired of being judged by wine drinkers

Every night, Margaret’s two boys fly into the house after sports practice and flip on the TV, while she races to the kitchen to get dinner cooking. “It’s that tedious witching hour when I feel incredibly frazzled,” says the Tennessee singer/songwriter mom of a 6- and an 8-year-old. But instead of pouring herself a glass or two of Merlot, she heads to the standalone garage next to their house for a few puffs of Humboldt Kush, one of the four strains of pot she smokes seven days a week.
The drug helps her keep focus on the giant statue of popsicle sticks she’s building with her kids and relaxes her so she can get through the rest of the night without stressing. “It can make folding a pile of laundry fun,” says Margaret, 45, who asked that we not use her last name for fear of getting in trouble with the law. “If I didn’t smoke, that’d be three piles later in the week.”...

Celebrity Sighting

Good news, ladies. I spotted a very intoxicated Brad Pitt stumbling out of a dive bar on Western and Roscoe.

80's Video Friday

It's hilarious that guys were actually serious when they made this video.  Please note that it appears 80% of this band had perms.

Shark: "Don't touch my stuff"

I really like how this dipshit, after shrieking in terror, attempts to reel in this "big ass shark". "It's all mine, It's all mine!!!"..... I think you're going to need a bigger net, buddy.

Hong Kong Apartment

Architect, Gary Chang, took his tiny 360 square foot Hong Kong apartment and turned it in to an efficient 24 room livable space.  This should give Ash and M. of The Dim Sum Diary some great ideas for their space in HK.  With M.'s love of Transformers, they should have their walls sliding into 50 or so rooms in no time. I expect to see a full size movie theater and billiard room in their place on our next visit.

For Esteban!

Click Here for Full Size Picture

Steven Foundling created the image of Steve Zissou returning to exact revenge on the Jaguar Shark who ate his closest colleague and senior statesman, Esteban du Plantier. The image shows Papa Steve fearlessly arriving to the battle mounted to a dolphin, weilding a trident, and cocking back to throw a stick of dynamite in the beast's mouth... as promised.
